Who are we?

Harmony House Dagenham CIO (charity number 1198573) is a community-centred organization based in Dagenham, Greater London. It serves as a hub for various social, educational, and community activities, aiming to enhance the quality of life for local residents

Establishment

Harmony House was established to provide a broad range of services to our community. Our primary focus has been on supporting vulnerable groups, including children, families, and the elderly. This is achieved through the operation of our three nurseries and various projects that empower the elderly and vulnerable members of our community to live independently, supported by a network of friends, companions and service staff. Our initiatives promote independence, reduce social isolation, and foster a strong sense of support and belonging within the community.

Formation and Early Years

  • Harmony House was established in 1993 in response to the needs of the recently arrived refugees and asylum seekers in Barking and Dagenham. As the numbers and needs of this group have diminished, harmony house adapted and channelled our resources into meeting the priority needs of the community. 
  • Harmony House was registered as a Community Interest Company in 2009 after previously being part of The Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. 

Expansion of Services

  • Over the years, Harmony House expanded its range of services to include health and wellness programs, youth activities, and adult education classes. 
  • The organization developed partnerships with local authorities, schools, and other charities to broaden its impact. 
  • Harmony House eventually shifted its focus to be mainly early childhood education and support for the elderly community. 

Charitable Incorporated Organization (CIO) Status

  • Harmony House transitioned to a Charitable Incorporated Organization in April 2022, enhancing its governance structure and enabling it to operate more effectively as a charity. 
  • This status provided a legal framework that helped in securing funding and support from various sources.

Community Impact

  • Harmony House has played a significant role in community cohesion by hosting regular events that bring members of the community together.
  • It has been instrumental in supporting local families through the various services offered at our 3 nurseries.

Recent Developments

  • In recent years, Harmony House has focused on sustainability and adapting to changing community needs during the ongoing cost of living crisis.  
  • The organization has implemented new programs to address issues such as mental health, digital literacy, and post-hospital support.
