About Harmony House

Overview

Who are we?

Harmony House Dagenham CIO (colloquially known as “Harmony House”)  was set up in 1993 to support vulnerable residents in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. Our work encompasses the running of three nurseries and a multitude of community projects aimed at reducing social isolation in a space where all members of the community, from the youngest to the eldest, are empowered to live with independence, purpose, and joy.

Establishment

Harmony House was established to provide a broad range of services to our community. Our primary focus has been on supporting vulnerable groups, including children, families, and the elderly. This is achieved through the operation of our three nurseries and various projects that empower members of our community to live independently, supported by a network of friends. Our initiatives promote independence, reduce social isolation, and create a strong sense of support and belonging within the community.

Formation and Early Years

  • Harmony House was established in 1993 in response to the needs of the recently arrived refugees and asylum seekers in Barking and Dagenham. As the numbers and needs of this group have diminished, harmony house adapted and channelled our resources into meeting the priority needs of the community.
  • Harmony House was registered as a Community Interest Company in 2009 after previously being part of The Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

Expansion of Services

  • Over the years, Harmony House expanded its range of services to include health and wellness programs, Early Years provision and community projects to tackle social isolation.
  • The organisation developed partnerships with local authorities, schools, and other charities to broaden its impact.
  • Harmony House eventually shifted its focus to be mainly early childhood education and support for the vulnerable and isolated within the community.

Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) Status

  • Harmony House transitioned to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation in April 2022, enhancing its governance structure and enabling it to operate more effectively as a charity.
  • This status provided a legal framework that helped in securing funding and support from various sources.

Community Impact

  • At Harmony House, our impact goes far beyond the walls of our building. As a trusted pillar of the community, we’re proud to be a vibrant hub of connection, support, and opportunity for residents across Barking and Dagenham.
  • Through our wide range of in-house projects, we tackle some of the most pressing challenges faced by our community: social isolation, economic hardship, and limited access to support. From our  Silvernet Get Together Groups offering connection and creativity to hundreds of isolated residents, to our Harmony Home Support team providing practical help around the home, every service is designed to empower individuals and promote independence.
  • Our three nurseries provide high-quality, inclusive early years education with freshly prepared meals and nurturing environments. They are a lifeline for working families, vulnerable children, and those facing disadvantage, helping to lay the foundation for a bright and healthy future.
  • Beyond our own services, Harmony House serves as a community base for numerous grassroots groups, faith communities, and local initiatives. Our space is regularly used by youth programmes, health and wellbeing groups and cultural organisations. This shared space model helps amplify the work of others, building a stronger, more resilient community together.

Recent Developments

  • At Harmony House, we are always evolving to meet the changing needs of our community. Over the past few months, we’ve made significant strides in deepening our impact and expanding the support we offer.
  • In 2026 we are focussing on our intergenerational projects, helping to build relationships across the board from the youngest to the eldest, to allow everyone to feel loved and wanted here.
  • We’ve created a community library, giving residents access to free books, quiet reading space, and educational resources for all ages. This new offering encourages literacy, lifelong learning, and a sense of shared ownership of our communal space.
  • We’ve welcomed over a dozen new community groups into Harmony House, broadening the range of support, activities, and cultural experiences available under our roof. From wellbeing sessions and recovery support to youth activities and social groups, our centre continues to be a vital base for local action.
