Intergenerational Projects at Harmony House

At Harmony House, we believe that bringing generations together creates stronger, kinder, and more connected communities. Our intergenerational projects give children, young people, and older adults the chance to share experiences, learn from one another, and build lasting friendships.
INTERGENERATIONAL PROJECT
We believe that bringing generations together creates stronger, kinder, and more connected communities.
Steps Together” Dance Class
Steps Together is a monthly dance class that brings together babies, toddlers, parents and elders to share the joy of a good boogie! This project was created in partnership with BabyZone and funded by Carey London Ltd through Hill Group UK and Peabody Dagenham Green Project. It will continue after this with the support of the Loved and Wanted fund.
Sessions take place on the first Wednesday of the month.
Paired Portrait Painting
Participants from different generations are paired to attend weekly workshops (across 10 weeks) focused on meaningful conversations and spending time to truly see each other to accurately capture the essence of the other person through their art. Finished portraits are displayed in a public exhibition celebrating these relationships.
Intergenerational Debate Club
Led by a trained facilitator, mixed-age teams explore structured, respectful debate. Participants are assigned positions to argue – often different from their own – to build empathy, active listening and the ability to navigate differing perspectives. This activity is especially impactful in a time of political tension and rising intergroup division.
Companions+ Befriending
An expansion of our successful Companions project, this strand recruits volunteers aged 18–35 to visit isolated older people regularly. Matches are carefully managed by Harmony House staff to ensure safety, consistency and mutual benefit. This allows older adults to transition into wider community groups with increased confidence but also to build friendships across the generations.
Creative Writing Across Generations
Facilitated by local authors, these workshops invite diverse participants to craft and share stories whether these be written, spoken or performed. Sessions encourage shared understanding and storytelling between generations and cultures.
